New Year's Resolutions
How to set and achieve your goals

January 2008

Elizabeth Ault MA, CPCC

As we all say goodbye to 2007 it seems like an appropriate time to remember with gratitude the gifts and challenges the year has brought to us. It's a good time to check inside and see what baggage remains to be released and forgiven.

In the spirit of improving our lot in life, most of us make New Year's resolutions. After all, if we stubbornly hold onto grudges, we only increase our own suffering. Gratitude opens the doors that allows an increase of all kinds of abundance to enter our lives. "The stream of plenty always flows toward the open expectant mind." Bob Proctor

In the spirit of improving our lot in life, most of us make New Year's resolutions. This year I'm going to lose that nagging 30 pounds. I'm going to spend more time with the family and take our dog on more walks. I'm going to quit smoking, and stop eating after 7:30PM. I'm going to quit that lousy job and figure out what I really want to do. I'm going to learn Spanish. I'm going to work less and earn more. You fill in the blank, this year I'm going to ...

Here are some guidelines regarding how to set and achieve goals. To begin, get over settling for less and go for the highest! Stop indulging in thoughts centering around lack. Call forth the courage and stamina required to be successful. Get over believing you are an under achiever or that you are somehow entitled to your excuses. Contemplate and prioritize what kinds of goals are most important to you; self-improvement, financial, business, personal, family, recreational, health etc... Create a goal juicy and challenging enough that you can be excited about it. You're only learning and growing if you're also stretching beyond your comfort zone. If your goal is too small, or easy you may become bored with it before achieving it.

It's always a good idea to make your goals very specific, measurable and within a window of time. How will you know that you have accomplished your goal? Imagine what will you be seeing, hearing, knowing, feeling, or sensing when you achieve this goal. Perhaps you will be seeing deposits into your bank account, or feeling the warm sand and gentle tide licking your feet on your tropical vacation. Perhaps you will be easily fitting into a dress in your favorite store that is a size 6. Live into the image of your success as fully as you can with your mind and all your senses.

Decide what you are going to commit to saying yes to, and what do you have to say no to. The act writing out your goals in a notebook is a powerful way to activate your intention. This strategy amplifies your intention. It is universally understood that what we think about we bring about. Determine what time-line, or deadline you have in mind for the completion of this project. What is the stumbling block on your journey; what's the pebble in your shoe? Identify your patterns of resistance to achieving your particular goal. What's the hardest thing about it? How will achieving it make you feel about yourself?

Perhaps you need to study or develop new skills to be able to successfully tackle your particular goal. Research what training or knowledge you will need to learn and whose support you will need to call upon. Be creative and figure out ways for those who help you to feel like it is a win-win for them too.

Identify what is non-negotiable that you absolutely must commit to, to successfully achieve your goal. Take your stand. It is important to communicate to those in your world, the sacrifices that you may need to make with your time, focus, and energy. Be aware of the sacrifices others may need to make on your behalf and enlist their support.

Consistently moving forward with the actions needed to succeed provides your subconscious with trust in your ability to achieve what you desire. Others get the message that you can be relied upon and your core integrity grows. Integrity is the foundation of all true success.

Organize your game plan in writing. Create a step-by-step action plan and ideally have someone to report to, who supports you and holds you accountable for your progress. This is someone who celebrates your milestones with you and helps mine the gems learned in your apparent failures. Every successful person has learned through scores, of what some call, failures. Taking risks is part of growing!

Set daily, weekly, monthly, annual, and long term goals. Refer to your goals daily, even re-write them and keep a copy in your pocket. Determine which steps are most important to take first. Notice how you spend your time each day.

Now, sit down and write out at least three goals that you would like to achieve in 2008. Sign it, date it and begin moving forward with your process to achieve it. Every journey begins with that first step. Never underestimate the power of baby steps. Bon Voyage!Allow me to support youas your coach.

I wish you all blessings of increasing health, wealth, wisdom and love in 2008!
