Seasonal Star Cycles

Aries the Ram
Birthing New Initiatives
April 2008

Elizabeth Ault MA, CPCC

Last month we looked into the other worldly Pisces, with their needs to find practical ways to create value for idealized impressions. Aries runs from the Spring Equinox, March 20st through April 20. The Ram with his curling horns represents creative ideas literally bursting open inside the brain, birthing new initiatives. An equal amount of combativeness will fight to protect his ambitions. First in the zodiac, Aries initiates a new cycle of life. At this time seedlings give a mighty push through thawing Earth to shoot up their sprouts and reach for the Sun.

Argumentative, energetic, and impulsive, Aries rules the head and thinking. The Ram glyph, with it’s two horns of the could also symbolize the first two leaves of a seedling or even the two hemispheres of the brain. Aries energy focuses on creating breakthroughs, but he is too impatient to be the one who maintains long term stability. Independent, robust and hard driving, the Ram needs to keep a watchful eye out for danger and reckless accidents.

Virile and vigorous Mars, the action oriented Warrior God, rules our muscles and the sign of Aries the Ram. Mars is looking for something to do, a project to champion, or a way to channel his courageous, masculine strength. He wants to be forceful, formidable. He loves confrontation and is willing to butt heads. For Aries, once the conquest is won, however, he is restless to get on to his next adventure, or romance. The Ram thrives on pumping adrenaline.

In his best light, the fiery Ram has become awakened, speaks his truth and holds a vision for the future, about how to make the world a better place. The challenge is to cultivate devotion, a special kind of steady depth of attention, which can develop into the power of sacrifice. The key is to be motivated toward pioneering an ideal so much, that one is inspired to make personal sacrifices, for the good of others. The downside looks like a headstrong, hostile loner who has trouble staying committed to anything, except himself, or a big headed me first kind of guy.

Jesus Christ lived 210 years before the end of the age of Aries, the Ram, and was called the Lamb of God. The gentle lamb was typically given as a sacrifice to please the Gods. During the age of Aries (B.C. 1947-A.D. 210) the process of incarnating from a more etheric group soul type of existence, into a more individuated self, was beginning to occur along with the development of independent thinking.

The first full Moon after the Spring Equinox sets the calendar date each year, for Easter. The Full Moon sets the date of Easter, which determines the timing of Good Friday and Ash Wednesday, Ascension Day and many other days in the Christian calender. The passion week of Christ occurs during this high energy time in Spring, when the soul forces of the Earth are rising from the core, pushing out plants with great vitality.

The desolate landscape of late winter softens with new green life. The mysteries of resurrection and rebirth are taking place everywhere. Bears and other animals awaken from their long winter naps, and emerge slim, from their tucked away homes.

At the Spring Equinox the dark of night is balanced equally by the light of day. Soon after, the daylight hours overtake the darkness, as life rushes forward in energetic growth. Ancient stone circles and temples, like Stone Henge built around 5,000 years ago, aligned it’s stones with the arc of the Sun, with it’s four power points: the Summer and Winter Solstices and the Spring and Fall Equinoxes. On these particular days, the Sun would peek through specific designed aligned openings in the rocks, or temple walls to provide special dispensations of communion with the light. Early Sun worshipers based their calendars on these four turning points in the year, and the 13 new Moon cycles.

Perennially, we often experience a cathartic storm that brews and flushes out the stagnation of late winter around the Spring Equinox. Frozen ponds quake and moan as melting ice begins to move downstream. The Spring thaw and April showers bring mud and flowers. Plant life surges with a rush of growth. Romantic urges heat up with the rites of Spring. Baby animals are born. The meadow larks and other birds warble their hearts away at the break of day. They can be seen flying overhead with beaks full of sticks and grasses for their nests and soon it will be worms for chirping mouths. A sense of relief comes with longer days. Our hearts are warmed by the sight of courageous crocuses, daffodils, grape hyacinths and hot pink ball cactus blooms. Rebirth is in the air, even if a few snowflakes are too! Now that high energy is peaking, what do you want to get started? Fertility wants to find expression.
